Trio for Viola, Alto Saxophone and Piano - Written by Russell Peterson (2010) 3 Movement work ca. 13 min.

The Trio for Viola, Alto Sax and Piano was written for and premiered by Violist Kate Hamilton, and pianist Jay Hersberger in Sept. 2010. The first movement was influenced by the music of composer Astor Piazzola after a trip Kate Hamilton took to Argentina, his home country. Very groovy and rhythmic like most of Piazzola's music. A Lovely, lyric second movement follows with weaving melodies between the sax and viola. The last movement is very fast and exciting, with all 3 performers asked to zip around their instruments with scales and arpeggios. I love the upper register of the saxophone, I find it expressive and outrageous! So, the saxophonist is asked to spend some time up there. Sometimes that annoys the viola player, but there are professionals to help with any anger issues this may cause. Also, meditation and deep breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety.

Extended altissimo for saxophonist required! Grade 4.
